The Shadow Army

An Army That Does Not Forget Who It Was

Most summoned creatures are mindless constructs. The Shadow Army is not. Every soldier was once a real entity with a name, a fighting style, and a will, and extraction preserves all of it. Igris still fights with honour. Beru still acts like a king. As long as Sung Jin-Woo has mana, none of them can die permanently.

This page covers extraction mechanics, the full rank hierarchy, profiles for every named soldier, and how the army grew from one nameless corpse to over ten million strong.

Weapon
Centipede-style whip-sword with extended ethereal blades.
Role
Supreme field commander. Leads the army independently.
Personality
Formal, ancient. Defers to Sung Jin-Woo less like loyalty and more like recognition of a long-awaited successor.
Origin
Pre-series. Inherited, not extracted.

Igris

Marshal

Job Change Quest boss. First named extraction. First attempt failed; second succeeded, the closest any major soldier came to permanent loss.

Title
Blood-Red Commander.
Weapon
Demon King's Longsword (acquired in the Demon Castle arc).
Role
Vanguard commander. Most trusted for holding a position independently.
Personality
Chivalrous. Silent through most of the series. Bows to worthy opponents before engaging.

Beru

Marshal

The Ant King, extracted at Jeju Island on the third and final attempt. Failed twice. One more failure would have lost him permanently.

Role
Shock assault and field healing. Fastest soldier in the army below Sung Jin-Woo.
Abilities
Flight. Healing magic. Gluttony: copies an enemy skill mid-fight temporarily.
Personality
Loudest and most independently minded of the three. Teaches himself Korean. By the epilogue addresses Sung Jin-Woo in informal register no other soldier uses.

Greed

General

Shadow of S-Rank hunter Hwang Dong-Su. The only soldier extracted from a human rather than a monster.

Jima

General

Naga-type soldier. Size manipulation and above-standard regeneration.

How the Army Grew

Each phase adds a capability the previous stage did not have.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to a target if all three shadow extraction attempts fail?

All three failures destroys the soul permanently. That target cannot be re-attempted regardless of how much time passes or how high Sung Jin-Woo's INT grows afterward. Beru failed twice before the third attempt succeeded; a third failure would have lost him permanently.

Can a shadow soldier be permanently killed once extracted?

A destroyed soldier regenerates fully in storage as long as Sung Jin-Woo retains mana. Permanent loss requires him to run completely dry while the soldier is deployed outside storage, which does not occur from the mid-series onward. A soldier can also be released intentionally, ending its existence.

What separates a Marshal from a General in the rank hierarchy?

Marshals possess full speech, complex independent reasoning, and the authority to act as Sung Jin-Woo's proxy commander in the field. Generals command divisions with meaningful autonomy but cannot represent Sung Jin-Woo or make strategic decisions on his behalf. Only Igris and Beru hold the Marshal rank below Grand-Marshal.

Does Beru retain his personality after extraction?

Yes, and it continues to develop after extraction. His loyalty to Sung Jin-Woo is absolute, but the directness, aggression, and independent will of the Ant King remain intact. By the epilogue he teaches himself Korean and addresses Sung Jin-Woo in informal register that no other soldier uses.

How does Monarch's Domain affect the shadow army in combat?

Monarch's Domain expands Sung Jin-Woo's shadow across the surrounding ground and gives every soldier standing within it a 50% boost to all stats. The buff applies to soldiers only, not to Sung Jin-Woo himself. Full mechanic on /powers-abilities.
